Having worked at newspapers I have experienced countless frustrations when dealing with sales people.
I came across this video that was hilarious and yet so true. You can substitute other jobs in place of the web dude as well.
Sometimes I seriously wonder about the sanity of sales people (and if they have a soul). Many people argue that sales is a hard job and that you have to be very good at it to succeed. My 2 cents is that sales people are not good at what they do, they are just the only people left who are willing to do it. Everyone else was smart enough to go get better jobs.
If you’re a sales person, try not to take offense to that. It’s just because my experiences with sales people have been worse than the scenario in this video. This is a prime example of why Stupid Sucks!

Stupid? salespeople earn 75% of newspapers revenue…in other words they paid your wages
Stupid? giving an 8 hour notice instead of 2 weeks…leaving your com padres to pick up your slack
Stupid? working from 8-5 instead of being a team member…a lowly menial clockwatcher lazy dude
Stupid? whining constantly and daily for earning what you were told you would earn
Stupid? accepting a salary, when you believe that you can make more with personal drive and passion if you are in the driver’s seat and on straight commission
Stupid? thinking you could beat the system with whine and granola
Stupid? thinking a kinder and gentler ‘new world’ is better than making things better …even if only on a small scale, than it is in the ‘old world order’ where making things better and seeking perfection is called character or class or passion or drive
Stupid? not believing that the customer who writes your paycheck ROCKS
Stupid? forgetting that customers pay the bills
Flaming sales people? with all the design talent in the world………where would you be or go …. if you can not sell yourself?
ahhhh…selling yourself is good - sales is good….salespeople ROCK
whereas lazy and stupid only wait under the rock … until they get a chance to ROCK and ROLL
Wish you the best. Your design was truly awesome…..but your attitude — sucked stupid.
hahahahaha!!! That was very entertaining, I appreciate the response.
Yes, salespeople do earn the most revenue…because “that’s the way it has always been done”. I had clients at my last newspaper who ended contracts early and stopped advertising because I left…and I wasn’t in sales.
Given the opportunity, the other designers would have done the exact same thing as I did and we all knew it. Complaining because other employees didn’t follow the rules and from being told we were just replaceable peons…that’s what happens when management refuses to change. And no, I was not earning what I was told I would be.
Beat the system? I took a FREELANCE position. That is harder than sales and production design…I have to do BOTH + web development! Plus, I tried to make that place better nearly every day I walked in there, until I realized nothing was happening. I was talking to a brick wall! Fighting a loosing battle in a world where you get nothing if you don’t take it for yourself is simply stupid.
Just because the customer “writes your paycheck” doesn’t mean the customer knows what they want or need. Being in a position where you have to watch people allow the customer to waste their money AND yours is painful.
Customers pay the bills, how many customers did we refund or give out freebies too? Too many to count. How many customers were being ignored….they outweigh the customers already established.
In this world you will not go anywhere if you can’t sell yourself. So it’s almost a requirement for people to be in sales. At the last newspaper I had been asked by management if I was interested in sales because of how I handled things when accompanying the reps calls there. If I can do it, it can’t be that hard.
The lazy and stupid rarely get the chance to rock and roll. It’s the ones who spend 8-5 working a full time job and go home to work another 4-5+ hours working so that they can get the chance to rock and roll.
My attitude was a result of the management and mindset of those around me. With answers staring them straight in the face they still chose the wrong way.
I have met sales people who were truly rock stars but the majority of them don’t even come close.
Carol your not the only person that feels that way.
Rock on, Jarel! Banging one’s head against a brick wall gets really frustrating. Especially when those brick walls are your co-workers and bosses. I’m impressed you lasted as long as you did. I certainly stayed longer than I wanted. I realize more than many that businesses are about making money, but I had never worked anywhere who made that more clear to its employees. And I’ve been everywhere from literal “Mom & Pop”s to IBM, one of the largest companies in the world. Everyday I saw you trying to make the work and environment better and easier for everyone. And everyday, I saw you get shot down, ignored, or worse - patronized.
Congrats on your escape and, believe me, no one who matters begrudged you the quick exit. Besides, we all knew for months that you were on your way out.
Thanks for your comment!
How is the new job going?
