Bums, Cell Phones and Michelle Obama

Well, I haven’t posted in the “Angry Posts” section for awhile now but I figured this was a good reason to. A good friend of mine sent me the following email.

Recently Michelle Obama went to serve food to the homeless at a government funded soup kitchen.

Michelle Obama at soup kitchen

Cost of a bowl of soup at homeless shelter: $0.00

Having Michelle Obama serve you your soup: $0.00

Snapping a picture of a homeless person who is receiving a government funded meal while taking a picture of the first lady using his $500 Black Berry cell phone: Priceless

How does a homeless person afford a blackberry or even yet cell phone service Is it also government funded? Oh yeah, that is why you and I are working!

I’m all for helping people who need help but I’m not for helping people who are just freeloaders. Also, I think it’s great to see people like Michelle Obama helping people like this but I can’t help but think that she could be using her position for much more good than this.

Many cities have this where you can donate your phones to the homeless. They are doing photo projects, getting on the internet, and sometimes even get to use the phone. Try and get a job without a phone number, McDonalds won’t even hire you. The service are usually partially subsided by the phone company and the city or a local charity.

I fully support programs like that and especially support helping people get back on their feet. It’s certainly not an easy world to live in, especially in bad economic times.

I’ve volunteered to help with stuff like this and what was most frustrating to me was that there are a lot of people who choose to be homeless for one reason or another. The tax payers don’t have a choice and have to support them. It gets really ridiculous but I know that a large portion of the taxes I pay that go towards helping the homeless is used to help people who are actually trying to do something with their lives. I’m happy to help those people. :-)

Simon don’t even say the donated phone is given to the unemployed, it isn’t and you should know better. They are given brand new phones and in most cases free plans or 1 dollar a month plans. While I pay my 80 dollar one.
