We live in a world where people are increasingly expecting more and faster speeds. In fractions of a second, your website can lose valuable visitors and in turn, money. Although most people think CDNs are for the “big dogs”, they’re actually super cheap and incredibly easy to use these days.

In this tutorial I’ll show you how to setup and use Amazon’s Web Services S3 and CloudFront to decrease website load time as well as show the performance differences.

An article I had written for the ThemeForest.net blog was published today (”Using AWS S3 to Power Your Digital World“) and one of the comments to the article mentioned Mosso’s Cloud Files. I had heard of Cloud Files before but I couldn’t remember if I had really looked into it. Due to the comment I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at Cloud Files and give a quick comparison.

There are a few arguments as to why you should use Cloud Files instead of Amazon’s CloudFront + S3 and Mosso even wrote a blog post with 10 reasons why Cloud Files provides a better experience than CloudFront + S3. They have some really good points but from my perspective it comes down to two things, price and performance. So after taking a look at Cloud Files I’ve come up with a quick comparison.

Sweet! Tonight I finished testing and setting up this blog to load stylesheets, javascript and template images from a Content Delivery Network (CDN). I’m using Google App Engine (not really a true CDN but it works well) which was much easier than I thought and it’s free!

I reduced the loading time of StupidSucks.com by over 70% which I think is pretty incredible. Anyway, I may have to post a quick tutorial on how to do this. If you’re interested in Google App Engine you can check it out here http://code.google.com/appengine/
